Welcome to the Beveridge Place Pub!

We opened Beveridge Place on October 27, 2003, however, its roots start back in December 2001, when we purchased the Full Moon Saloon.  In between, many changes were made - some subtle, like slowly changing the beer selection, some dramatic, like the renovation of the front room into a non-smoking pub.  We strive to offer our guests the best beer selection possible in a comfortable, lively setting.  We feature two unique atmospheres for your pleasure:  the Front Room - vintage décor, couches, and board games; and the Game Room - darts, pool, foosball, video games, and satellite TV.

The Beer.  It’s all about the beer.  Our philosophy is to offer on an ever-changing variety of craft-brewed draft ales and lagers on tap, focusing on those made in Washington.  The Pacific Northwest is recognized as the solid core of the microbrew movement and we want to support these talented local brewers.  We also regularly serve draft beers from foreign lands such as Europe, Asia, and Oregon.  Our bottled beer selection will transport you around the world.  The best offerings from Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, the Czech, and elsewhere are available for your enjoyment.

The Renovation.  In October 2002, we closed the front room for a “minor” renovation.  After tearing down the ceiling, putting up new walls, uncovering windows, installing a half-ton bowling lane bartop, adding new lighting, and painting, we were done (well, mostly).  On December 19, 2002, with the support of many friends and our wonderful staff, we re-opened the front room as a smoke-free area, keeping the back room as a game room with smoking permitted.   One of the great discoveries of the renovation is the large world map you see framed into the wall.  This linen wallpaper map is a reproduction of a 17th century French map and has been hanging there for over 30 years, yet had been covered up with paneling for at least the past twenty.  We knew we had to preserve this link with the past, which also reflects our quest for the world’s best beers.

The Name.  The name Beveridge Place Pub reflects the evolution of our place from tavern to alehouse - a comfortable “local” that emphasizes quality ales and lagers. The word ‘pub’ is short for ‘public house’, which evokes that home-away-from-home feeling reminiscent of the pubs of Great Britain and Ireland. Beveridge Place is the name of the street that runs alongside our pub.  We felt it was too much of a coincidence to pass up on the play on words.  We also wanted to build a strong connection to the local community by using a neighborhood landmark for our name.

The Food.  Along with the wide variety of beers and games, the Beveridge Place Pub also offers the most diverse food selection in West Seattle - without a kitchen!  Ask your bartender for the Menu Book, which includes menus from local restaurants that provide delivery or take-out.  On any given night you can enjoy Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, and American cuisine, and the ever-popular beer food - pizza.  We decided it was more important for us to concentrate on what we know best, quality beer, and let the restaurants take care of what they do best, quality food.  You can even bring food from home if you’d like.

The Backbar.  The visual centerpiece of our pub is our turn-of-the-century (that's 20th century) backbar.  This beautiful piece of furniture found its way to BPP in a serendipitous way.  Our bartender Jennifer ran across an on-line ad for an auction for a Kent tavern, the Buzz Inn, that was going out of business.  "Antique backbar" was one of the items items listed, but we half-expected it to be a 1960s pressboard model.  Imagine our surprise when we walked in and saw an 11 foot high, 20 foot long Brunswick with three mirrored archeways!  It was dark brown, stained with 100 years of nicotine, but amazing nonetheless.  The next surprise came when we won the auction, followed by an immediate, "Oh shit, what now?!"  Through the help of many good friends with more carpentry knowledge than you can shake a 2x4 at, we dismantled the backbar, moved it to a friends garage and spent the next three months cleaning the wood (with the stellar help of our friend Catherine).  The sumptuous cherry-stained tiger maple underneath was beautiful!!  Step 47 (I skipped a few): Piecing the backbar back together in its new home at BPP.  Again we relied on friends - professional carpenters, of course.  Add in a custom tap tower from a local metalsmith and we're ready to unveil the most impressive backbar in West Seattle, if not the entire city.  It still sends a shiver up our spine!

So, pull up a chair, order a brew, kick back and stay a while.  We promise we’ll do our best to make you feel like you never left home.  We hope you come often to enjoy a pint among friends.

Cheers,

Gary, Terri, Jennifer, Rob, Dennis, April, Jon, Lorraine, Allison, and sometimes Devrim
